Job Summary
The Senior Messaging Engineer designs, implements, secures, and supports the firm’s enterprise messaging ecosystem across on-premises and cloud environments. This role is a key owner for Microsoft Exchange (on-prem and online), Microsoft 365, Teams, Intune, Proofpoint, and Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure AD), ensuring availability, security, compliance, and performance in a hybrid, multi-site law-firm environment. The engineer partners closely with security, infrastructure, and legal operations teams.
Essential Job Functions
- Architect & Operate: Design, configure, and maintain Microsoft Exchange (on‑prem) and Exchange Online with a focus on high availability, security, and resilience.
- Hybrid Collaboration: Administer and support Microsoft 365 services and Microsoft Entra ID, including federation/SSO and identity hygiene.
- Platform Reliability: Manage upgrades, patching, change control, and configuration baselines across messaging platforms.
- Advanced Troubleshooting: Provide Tier 2/3 support for Outlook and third‑party clients; resolve complex mail‑flow problems.
- Secure Transport & Hygiene: Establish/maintain secure TLS/SSL partner connections; implement and monitor SPF/DKIM/DMARC.
- Automation: Develop and maintain automation to streamline operations, reporting, and remediation.
- Monitoring & Performance: Analyze queue health, routing, and performance; integrate with enterprise monitoring tools.
- Identity & Access: Support directory components and identity lifecycle; manage SSO and Conditional Access policies.
- Compliance & eDiscovery: Implement retention, legal hold, and Microsoft Purview policies; support discovery requests.
- Endpoint & Mobile: Manage Intune MDM/MAM for iOS/Android; enforce mobile access and conditional access policies.
- Resilience & BC/DR: Ensure messaging services align with the Firm’s Business Continuity Plan.
- Vendor & Stakeholder Management: Evaluate third‑party solutions; manage vendor relationships.
- Reporting: Produce monthly health/security reports and platform assessments.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
- 4+ years administering Microsoft Exchange, Windows Server, and Active Directory (on‑prem).
- 3+ years managing Microsoft 365 tenants in hybrid scenarios.
- Experience administering Proofpoint (or similar email security gateway).
- Strong communication skills with technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively; occasional after‑hours maintenance and on‑call.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 lbs of IT equipment; valid U.S. driver’s license.
Preferred Skills
- Deep expertise with Exchange DAGs, Edge Transport, and high‑availability topologies.
- Strong automation using Microsoft Power platform; source-control practices for scripts.
- In‑depth knowledge of SMTP/MAPI/TLS and messaging security best practices.
- Implement retention/eDiscovery with Microsoft Purview; partner with Legal.
- Experience with email mailbox/database recovery and cross‑forest migrations.
- Familiarity with VMware/Hyper‑V, enterprise monitoring, and archiving solutions.
- Solid understanding of networking fundamentals and disaster‑recovery planning.
- Strong analytical, communication, documentation, and project‑management skills.
