Position Summary:

Our Chicago office is looking for a Desktop Technician. The Desktop Technician takes a technical role in the firm using advanced knowledge of client computer operating systems, client computer management, application packaging and deployment. Assumes responsibility for configuring and deploying computers to staff and assists in packaging and deployment of applications to client computers. May assist in deployment to virtual desktops or desktop presentation servers. Responsible for workstation configuration, software version control, deployment, updates and interoperability of applications and inventory. Serves as a technical resource in project teams and department staff in developing creative solutions to application issues.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Resolves tickets escalated from the helpdesk and other groups, especially to identify systemic issues and recommends steps to remediate those issues. Works with Help Desk to develop processes, procedures and documentation to improve Level One resolution rates.
  2. Using technical knowledge, assists in deployment and maintenance of client computers, including but not limited to imaging, updating, patching, and application deployment. Works with IT staff and members of the user community to research and evaluate software products to meet the needs of the Firm.
  3. Prepares software for distribution to firm personnel using firm standard and industry best practices.
  4. Manages desktop customization through third-party applications, login scripts, Active Directory Group Policy and other established means
  5. Assists in the development and maintenance of computer images.
  6. Develops and follows a structured testing plan for new software and hardware implementations.
  7. Compiles documentation on testing and problem resolutions and shares knowledge with colleagues.
  1. Provides technical input to IT team members in the design and documentation of in-house training programs. Partners with application analysts and user application “owners” to ensure the successful deployment of applications.
  2. Assists in the deployment and maintenance of printers. This includes print server technology, “direct-IP” printing, and configuring multi-function devices for scanning to email and network folders. Also includes liaisoning with Hinshaw’s print vendors.
  3. Communicates directly with attorneys and initiates and maintains contacts with consultants and applications vendors for technical support and ensures the appropriate implementation, maintenance and support of applications and upgrades.
  4. Assumes responsibility for maintaining the highest level of confidentiality of all firm records and files.
  5. Leads/participates in departmental project teams and task forces designed to streamline workflow and/or resolve issues; assists with various firm and/or departmental projects and initiatives as assigned.
  6. Proactively maintains and expands knowledge of trends, developments and new technologies related to the Firm’s IT-supported hardware and software applications. Researches, evaluates and provides input on software products and researches, evaluates and recommends enhancements to current policies, procedures, and technologies.
  7. Adhere to all company IT policies and security protocols
  8. Assumes additional responsibilities as requested
  9. Occasionally assists with A/V Setups

Minimum Job Qualifications:

  1. A+ or equivalent IT certification
  2. Minimum 2 years of experience in a technical support role, with a focus on resolving user issues in an office environment.
  3. Strong understanding of Windows 11 operating systems, including experience with troubleshooting common problems specific to these platforms.
  4. Experience with MacOS a plus, as some attorneys may utilize Apple products.
  5. Excellent customer service and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
  6. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating effectively with both internal and external IT resources.
  7. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  8. Experience with cloud-based collaboration tools (e.g., Microsoft 365) a plus.
