Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer

Position overview:
The Chief Marketing & Business Development Officer (CMBDO) will serve as a key member of the firm’s leadership team, playing a pivotal role in shaping the firm’s growth and market presence. With a strong national footprint, the firm offers an exciting opportunity for a dynamic MBD leader to drive strategic initiatives at a high level.
Reporting to the Chief Operations Officer, the CMBDO will bring deep industry experience, innovative thinking, and strong relationship management skills to align marketing and business development strategies with firmwide goals. This is a highly visible role that requires a forward-thinking leader who can elevate the firm’s brand, enhance client engagement, and position the firm for continued success in a competitive legal market.
CMBDO Responsibilities
Leadership and Management
- Collaborate with firm leadership on strategic planning and firmwide initiatives.
- Provide vision and leadership to the MBD team, hiring and enabling a high-performing, proactive culture through effective performance management, communication, and ongoing development.
- Develop a clear system for prioritizing marketing and BD efforts across practice groups, offices, and industries to maximize impact with limited resources.
- Identify, implement, and continuously refine marketing strategies, tactics, tools, and procedures utilizing data-driven insights.
- Manage the marketing budget and allocate resources effectively to maximize ROI.
- Oversee vendor relationships for marketing tools and systems.
- Provide clear leadership that establishes credibility with firm leaders, attorneys, staff, and clients.
Business Development
- Drive the implementation of the firm’s strategic MBD plan, including proactively evaluating the plan’s effectiveness to ensure it continues to meet changing needs and objectives.
- Lead a robust industry group initiative focused on enhancing cross-selling efforts firmwide.
- Develop and lead client retention and growth strategies – including launching client teams and client feedback initiatives – focused on clients with strong profitability and potential for expansion.
- Collaborate with firm leaders to create and implement actionable business development plans for offices, practices, and industries.
- Foster collaboration with other administrative departments to support client growth initiatives.
- Oversee the preparation of client presentations, RFPs, pitches, and directory submissions, ensuring the highest quality work product.
- Manage market research and competitive analysis to enhance marketing efforts.
- Implement training programs to upskill and educate attorneys on industry trends and best practices in marketing and business development.
- Support firmwide lateral integration efforts.
Marketing and Branding
- Create a cohesive brand strategy that positions the firm as an elite mid-market firm and differentiates it from competitors.
- Lead the firm’s digital marketing strategy, ensuring alignment with overall business objectives, brand positioning, and client engagement goals.
- Oversee the development, management, and continuous optimization of the firm’s website, ensuring it serves as a dynamic platform for thought leadership, attorney visibility, and business development.
- Lead content strategy for digital channels, including website, email marketing, and social media, ensuring a cohesive brand voice and engagement with key audiences.
- Oversee analytics for website performance and digital campaign metrics, leveraging data-driven insights to refine strategies and maximize impact.
- Work closely with IT and external vendors to ensure website functionality, security, and user experience are optimized.
- Stay ahead of digital marketing trends, evaluating new tools, technologies, and best practices to enhance the firm’s online presence and competitive positioning.
- Oversee the execution of high-caliber internal and external events, ensuring maximum ROI.
Qualifications & Experience
- At least 10 years’ experience in professional services and/or legal marketing.
- Extensive experience leading a team of MBD professionals and translating vision into action.
- Strong executive presence
- Understands marketplace trends and implements innovative solutions and improvements.
- Handles ambiguity, influences others, and finds ways to move initiatives forward to meet critical deadlines and produce results.
- Strong work ethic combined with the flexibility to travel to the firm’s other offices, as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
